Home Security Tips From a Local Locksmith in Harlow

Home security doesn't always mean fitting the most expensive lock available or covering your property with new equipment.

After more than 20 years working as a locksmith, I've found that some of the most useful improvements come from identifying the weak points that are already there.

I'm Andy from Emergency Local Locksmith in Harlow. I work on homes throughout Harlow and the surrounding parts of Essex and Hertfordshire, and these are some of the things I recommend checking around your own property.

1. Check Your Front Door Lock

Start with the door you use every day.

Different doors use different locking systems, so there isn't one lock that's automatically right for every property.

Traditional timber doors may have mortice locks and night latches, while many uPVC and composite doors use Euro cylinders connected to multipoint locking mechanisms.

The important thing is knowing what's fitted and whether it's suitable for the door.

If you have an older lock and you're unsure about its security, a locksmith can inspect it and tell you whether an upgrade would actually be worthwhile.

Don't replace a perfectly good lock simply because somebody wants to sell you another one.

2. Check Euro Cylinders on uPVC and Composite Doors

If your front or back door uses a Euro-profile cylinder, check what type it is.

Older and lower-security cylinders may provide less resistance to common attack methods such as lock snapping.

Modern security-rated cylinders are available with features designed to make these attacks considerably more difficult.

However, the cylinder is only one part of the door.

Handles, the multipoint mechanism, door alignment and the condition of the frame all matter as well.

I regularly inspect uPVC and composite doors where the customer initially believes the lock is the problem but the actual fault is elsewhere in the mechanism.

3. Don't Ignore a Door That's Becoming Difficult to Lock

A stiff handle or key can be an early warning.

If you're having to lift the handle harder than usual, push against the door before turning the key, or repeatedly try the lock before it works, don't assume that's normal wear.

On a multipoint door, this can sometimes indicate an alignment problem or a mechanism beginning to fail.

Continuing to force it can turn a relatively straightforward problem into a complete lockout.

If something has noticeably changed in the way your door operates, getting it checked early can often save considerable inconvenience later.

4. Check Your Back and Side Doors

People naturally concentrate on the front door because it's the main entrance to the property.

Walk around your home and look at the other access points as well.

Check back doors, side doors, patio doors and doors leading from garages into the house.

Ask yourself when those locks were last inspected.

A high-security front door doesn't provide much reassurance if another entrance has an old or damaged locking system.

Security works best when the property is considered as a whole rather than concentrating on one lock.

5. Secure Garages, Sheds and Outbuildings

Garages and sheds often contain thousands of pounds' worth of tools, bicycles, gardening equipment and other valuables.

Unfortunately, the lock securing them may have cost very little.

Look at the hasp, padlock, door construction, hinges and frame — not just the lock itself.

There's little benefit in fitting a substantial padlock to hardware that can easily be pulled away from the door.

Depending on the type of garage or outbuilding, additional physical security may also be worth considering.

The right solution depends on what you're securing and the construction of the building.

6. Think About Where Spare Keys Are Kept

Leaving a spare key somewhere outside the property can be convenient, but obvious hiding places aren't particularly secure.

Under plant pots, beneath doormats and inside easily accessible garden objects are places worth avoiding.

If you need an external key storage solution, use a purpose-designed key safe suitable for the location and make sure it is fitted securely.

I supply and fit key safes where required, including situations where authorised family members, carers or other people need controlled access to a property.

7. Change Locks When Key Security Is Uncertain

There are times when changing a lock isn't about the condition of the lock at all.

If you've moved into a property and don't know who has copies of the keys, or keys have been lost or stolen in circumstances that concern you, changing the relevant locks can restore control over access.

That doesn't necessarily mean replacing every piece of door hardware.

Depending on the locking system, the appropriate cylinder or lock may be all that needs changing.

A locksmith should be able to explain the options before carrying out the work.

8. Don't Forget Windows and Patio Doors

A secure front door is only one part of home security.

Check that accessible windows close and lock correctly and that patio or sliding doors operate as intended.

If something no longer closes properly, investigate why rather than simply forcing it shut.

Door and window movement can occur over time, and worn hardware shouldn't be ignored simply because it still works with a bit of persuasion.

9. Exterior Lighting Can Be a Useful Deterrent

Good exterior lighting can make entrances, side passages and outbuildings less attractive places for somebody to work unnoticed.

Motion-activated lighting can be particularly useful around darker areas of a property.

Lighting isn't a replacement for good physical security, but the two can complement each other.

The same principle applies to alarms and CCTV.

Those systems may add another layer of security, but strong doors, appropriate locks and correctly functioning hardware remain important.

For clarity, Emergency Local Locksmith does not install CCTV or alarm systems.

10. Be Careful With DIY Lock Upgrades

There are plenty of locks available online, but buying something labelled “high security” doesn't automatically mean it's suitable for your door.

Correct sizing and installation matter.

This is particularly important with Euro cylinders. A cylinder that's the wrong length can protrude unnecessarily from the door furniture.

Similarly, changing individual components of a multipoint system without identifying the actual fault can create further problems.

If you're comfortable doing basic maintenance yourself, that's fine. But if you're unsure about compatibility or security, get advice before buying parts.

What I Look for During a Home Security Check

When I'm asked about improving the security of a property, I don't begin with the assumption that everything needs replacing.

I'll look at the locks already fitted, the condition of the doors, cylinders, handles, mechanisms and obvious points of weakness.

Some properties genuinely benefit from upgraded locks.

Others need a repair or adjustment more than they need new hardware.

And sometimes the existing security is perfectly adequate.

If that's what I find, I'll say so.

That's what repair before replace means in practice.
