It’s a question I get asked almost every week on my call-outs across Harlow, Essex, and Hertfordshire.
People love the idea of a smart lock. The convenience of opening your front door with your smartphone, checking if the kids got home from school, or letting the dog walker in while you’re at work is brilliant. But then the inevitable question follows:
“Andy, if it’s connected to the internet, can’t a burglar just hack my front door?”
As a traditional, 24/7 emergency locksmith, I’ve seen firsthand how burglars actually break into homes. Here is my honest, professional take on whether smart locks are safe for your property.
The Truth About “Hacking” Your Front Door
Let’s clear up the biggest misconception right away. When we picture a burglary, we sometimes imagine a high-tech thief standing on your driveway with a laptop, furiously typing code to hack your WiFi.
The reality in the UK is much less glamorous. Burglars are opportunists. They want to be in and out in under 60 seconds. They don’t use laptops; they use brute force, crowbars, and mole grips.
The most common method of entry is lock snapping—where a burglar physically snaps the barrel of a cheap lock in half to open the door. Therefore, it doesn’t matter how advanced the software on your smart lock is; if the physical metal cylinder holding it to the door is cheap, your home is vulnerable.
The Solution: The “Hybrid” Smart Lock
If you want the convenience of a smart home without sacrificing real-world security, you need a hybrid lock.
You don’t want a lock that is only electronic. You want a smart lock that is built around a heavy-duty, anti-snap physical cylinder.
As an independent locksmith, I highly recommend systems like the Ultion Nuki. We already know that Ultion makes some of the toughest, 3-Star British Standard locks on the market (which we supply and fit). The Nuki system simply attaches to the inside of your door, turning the key for you via Bluetooth or WiFi.
From the outside, it looks like a high-security traditional lock. From the inside, it’s a fully automated smart home hub.
What happens if the battery dies or there is a power cut?
This is the second biggest fear homeowners have, and it’s completely understandable. Nobody wants to be locked out in the rain because their front door needs charging!
Here is why you don’t need to worry:
-
Advanced Warnings: Smart locks don’t just suddenly die. Your phone app will start sending you low-battery notifications weeks before it actually runs out of juice.
-
The Physical Override: This is why I only recommend hybrid locks. Even if you completely ignore the battery warnings and the lock dies, you still have a physical key. You simply put your high-security key into the lock from the outside and turn it manually, just like a normal door.
The Verdict: Should You Get One?
Yes, smart locks are safe—if you choose the right brand and have it installed correctly. If you buy a cheap, unbranded electronic lock off the internet, you are compromising your physical security. If you choose a high-end system built on a British Standard 3-Star cylinder, your home will be as secure as Fort Knox, with the added bonus of keyless entry.
If you live in Harlow, Bishop’s Stortford, Sawbridgeworth, or the surrounding areas and are considering a smart lock upgrade, don’t guess with your home security.
