People often believe that when they have been the victim of a break-in that they were just unlucky that their home was chosen as a target. However, over the years our team at Emergency Local Locksmith have a slightly different view. In most cases, when we attend a property after a break-in there is always at least one thing that stands out that made their home a target for burglars.

The best advice we can give, as locksmiths to our customers is to make sure your security measures are as good as they can be. If a burglar is waking past your property and see high security locks in place, then this would make them keep looking for an easier target. It is always good to be aware of the home security measures you have in place and frequently check how they can be improved.

Here at Emergency Local Locksmith, we are happy to advise our customers on the best ways they can improve their home security measures and, in most cases, we can supply and fit any necessary security measures.

Burglars often find homes and businesses with considerable security measures off putting so they are less likely to choose that property as a target. Burglars tend to walk around checking out an area and pin pointing properties they feel have weak enough security measures for them to be a quick and easy target. It is the security measures that are visible from the outside of your property that work best in deterring burglars so it is these measures that you should first focus your attention on.

Visible Security Measures

  • Multiple Locks
  • Alarms
  • CCTV
  • Lock Guards
  • Window Locks
  • High Security Locks
  • Security Grilles

Less visible security measures that make access difficult for burglars:

  • Hinge Bolts
  • London Bars
  • Birmingham Bars

Although these security measures can’t be seen by a burglar and won’t work as a deterrent, should a burglar attempt a break-in at your property it would be much more difficult for them to break-in, it could just be the difference between a break-in and an attempted break-in.

Basic Security Measures All Properties Should Have In Place

In order to protect your property, there are basic security measures that should be in place even if you don’t want the visible deterrents and high security measures.

  • External doors should have a 5-leaver BS3621 dead lock installed
  • All window locks should be key operated

If you don’t have these basic security measures in place at your property, then it is highly recommended that you have a locksmith come and upgrade your door and window locks as soon as possible.

Once you have the basic security measures in place you can then turn your attention to implementing some of the higher security measures, we have mentioned in order to better improve your home security and make it less appealing to burglars.
